90s microsoft: gobernment, can we pwease bundwe our bwowser software wid our opewating system
us government: no fuck you we are suing your ass into the next century
2010s google: hey so we're gonna own a phone OS, the worlds most popular web browser, the browser rendering engine that everyone else except firefox uses, the worlds most popular search engine, and the worlds most popular email service, that cool?
us government: *looks up from playing pokemon* huh? what? oh yeah whatever dont care
@dankwraith *amazon noises*
yeah, that happened and then Microsoft just happened to coincidentally take fuckloads of politicians to posh, well-funded seminars (IIRC) and hey! okay now Microsoft is totes legal! no worries. antitrust? what's that?
@dankwraith the thing that pisses me off about the Browser thing, is that was the government's weakest case for a monopoly.
Be Inc had signed affidavits from computer manufactures that proved that Microsoft used their 800 pound gorilla status to force the manufs to not allow BeOS as an option. DOJ blew them off.
/me is still bitter, 20+ years later.
@dankwraith LOL imagining Bill Gates talking like that
